Overcoming obstacles

It’s often easy to focus on the things that are going wrong in life, and so it may be helpful to look at the story of a young woman who shows that overcoming obstacles is possible once you make up your mind. Billie, from Frewville SA, is a past Slimmer of the Year winner, and we think she’s pretty inspirational:

“2014 was a tough year for me, after tragically losing both my sister and brother in February and May of that year unexpectedly.

My sister left behind four beautiful children that I now help to care for with my parents. Through this huge upturn in our family, I found comfort in food and work. I kept my self very busy working 3 part-time jobs and studying full-time. I had always been overweight since my early teenage years; however, I had gained even more by the end of that year through grief, and simply not prioritising my own needs.

I was physically and emotionally exhausted, always reaching for food to gain energy. One morning on my way home from work, I fell asleep at the steering wheel. I realised I had suffered a huge sugar drop after eating a bag of lollies on night shift, and this was my wake-up call that something had to change. It was this same week that my friend invited me to a class at Healthy Inspirations, and so my journey began!

It has been a fun but challenging experience with endless shift work and family commitments, all while trying to complete my degree! I set a goal to achieve my weight loss by the time I graduated as a Registered Nurse. I was looking forward to wearing the dress of my dreams for the Graduation Ball, and savour the moment with all of my beautiful nursing sisters. That night, I had achieved my goal and was able to celebrate the two greatest achievements of my adult life!

I am a huge believer of being the change I want to see in the world. As a nurse, I wanted to achieve health and practice what I preached! This will always keep me accountable and motivated to inspire others by being true to myself. The happiness effect of weight loss is contagious, and people around me have been inspired to make changes in their life too. Already, my Mum has lost 12 kg in the last 3 months by following the Healthy Inspirations reset program!

I have come to realise the incredible capability of the human body. Not only of my own body, but that of the whole family at Health Inspirations! The women here are of all ages and backgrounds, and each member has their own story to tell. We inspire each other with flowing positive energy and acknowledge each little win. Women banding together as a powerful force is a catalyst for success!”

After having a knee replacement I became a couch potato and decided that it was time I did something about my weight. My journey to better health and losing weight has been an awesome experience. To feel better in yourself by the weight loss and the healthy eating is amazing.

By joining Healthy Inspirations I have had a few weeks where I have put on weight but the ladies at Healthy Inspirations have put me back on the right track. The support from coaching team is awesome they help and suggest things that are starting to go wrong with your weight.

I can now walk for an hour or more, keeping up with my family and not having to rest or get breathless.

It is a great feeling knowing that you are looking good and see the results of your hard work. I feel so much better in myself and looking in the mirror and seeing the weight coming off.

I will keep on going to Healthy Inspirations as the exercise and healthy eating makes me feel good.

My cardiologist’s instructions were lose weight get stronger. I joined the program and replaced my keg with a healthy six pack. I feel great, healthier, and have fewer aches and pains.  Caravaning trips away are easy again and filled with activity and fun.

As a child I had always been on the chubby side and I was addicted to sweet things! I was never happy with my appearance or indeed happy within my own skin and had tried many different diets. I still have many weight loss books in my bookshelf that promised the world but I never succeeded in any of them! It is time to throw them out because the programme at HI is what worked for me and what is still working for me!

It is 10 years in February since I first joined Healthy Inspirations in Sale. After experiencing a summer of gluttony back in 2006 I finally decided to give the programme a go. It took me three months to convince myself to at least try and the girls at HI were so encouraging from the word go!

I was surprised at how easy the program was to follow, how much there was to eat and I grew to love eating a variety of salads, vegetables, chicken and other healthy choices. One of the successes of the programme is the amount of choice there is and because we are all different we can choose what suits our tastes and therefore the chances of succeeding are greater.

Don’t misunderstand though, I was not perfect and ‘fell off the wagon’, so to speak, many times and berated myself for doing so. The key here though is to get right back on track. Enjoy the indulgence but at the very next meal revert to the programme. This way not so much is lost!

I lost about a kilo per week and couldn’t believe that I reached my goal of 10 kilos three months down the track.

I started at 78 kilos and now am usually between 59 and 60 kilos and am so happy to be here. It is so nice to be able to buy or put on clothes without having to force the zipper closed!

The staff at HI in Sale are fantastic and it’s always wonderful to get a friendly hello and smile. I weigh in once a week now but this too keeps me on track because I hold myself accountable.

It is lovely to follow the journeys of other members and to enjoy their successes as it is to meet new people and make new friends whilst chatting in the circuit.

The programme works and when people ask me what I am doing I proudly tell them I attend HI and why don’t they give it a go whether it be for weight loss or fitness.

Top tips for losing weight:

The support is the ‘crux’ to being able to lose weight and more importantly to keep it off and maintain one’s goal weight. I feel support when I enter the centre and my weekly weigh in and one-on-one gives me encouragement to ‘stay on track’.

Meet Jayne

Lost 15kg and 44cm – but gained everything

I was at the heaviest I had been in years and was conducting a lifestyle that consisted of working, cooking, eating, sitting on the couch until late and then sleeping. I had walked past Healthy Inspirations many times thinking I should go in, so I made the call and went and met with the wonderful staff. My husband was going to support me in any way he could and by Wednesday I had a t-shirt, sneakers, lycra pants (!) and I was enrolled and ready to go.

Now this is where the story to my amazing new life begins and between you and I, I have a little secret – this has been the easiest thing I have ever done. I met with the most amazing team of HI lifestyle coaches and we planned a nutrition and exercise plan and off I went. I was finding I was actually enjoying the feeling I got from exercising (this was a surprise), a real internal pride that I had got off my puckered bum and done something healthy that set me up for the day. I had so much energy that my husband was telling me to sit down and relax! Within the first few weeks I had lost a few kilos’ (great motivation) and I was learning so much about food and good nutrition it was empowering. The best part about this is that my family is also learning by eating the same way and ensuring that our portions were right.

5 months on and I am the happiest I have been in a long time. I am lighter, smaller and even a little bit sexy. My husband comments on my new-found confidence; something as a regular public speaker I have never suffered a lack of, but this is different – this is personal. I carry my head higher, walk with my shoulders back and sashay happily into shops knowing that an off the rack size is going to fit. Work colleagues are noticing the difference and the positive affirmations keep rolling in – apparently I am now inspiring others. My daughter tells me that I am her skinny yummy mummy and she is loving the new energetic me, something that makes me incredibly proud. I am breaking the cycle. Most in my family carry a few extra kilos and I am not going to allow that history to continue – health, nutrition and exercise are our new family mantra and water our new wine!

OK, my secrets:

  • attending the centre 4 times a week,
  • work with the gorgeous and supportive lifestyle HI coaches about healthy nutrition
  • make drinking water a job.

Trust me, the journey and investment in your health is worth everything.
